Using drill and router a pit was cut in the hog to a depth of 48 mm and the mast step put in place temporarily.  We adjusted the spreaders according to the Goacher tuning guide although I am running an Alto and not and Epsilon mast, then we raised the mast and checked the shroud attachments.  The attachment plates were drilled and installed to the deck.  All looks pretty good.  It would be nice to do something about the bolts sticking up, perhaps sink them flush.

Finally had a chance to roll out and raise the mast to check the height.  Mast step was mounted temporarily then using a jig I marked the sheer below the gate.  The mast standing in its step is 53 mm above the #4 marker.  This could be 38 mm if I move the markers but for now its time to pull out the Forstner and router to dig a hole in the hog.

  1. Mount tank covers, 4x.
  2. Install console and floor boards.
  3. Build Genoa plinth.
  4. Install forestay keelson links.
  5. Install spinnaker tube (probably on hold till after initial ocean tryout).
  6. Trailer inspections and license.
  7. Install to trailer.
  8. Mast fitting.
  9. Fitout blocks, lines etc.
  10. License and sail.

The trailer is much more stable than I would have thought.  The side pads need some work for a better fit but bow and keel are solido.  A better gantry system would have simplified this.  The weather is delaying the mast checkout.  Once it clears the boat could be rolled out and the mast raised, maybe tomorrow afternoon.

Wood base will have wedge plate at front.
New kid in town.

The gantry had to be widened by 2 inches to fit the trailer but in the mean time the boat and keel together have been lifted as one and should be ready to lift and place on the trailer for fitting.   The final coat of deck paint was applied as well as some touch up in the cockpit.

  1. Sand out deck surfaces and clean.
  2. Test deck paint system with anti skid material.  The roll and tip painting was very successful but the working time was a bit fiddley.
  3. Apply first coat of deck paint system.  30%
  4. Apply second coat.  Mask and paint stripe.
  5. Final paint touch up interior and vacuum throughout.
  6. Mount tank covers, 4x.
  7. Make keel bolt upper plates.  Mount keel, bolts and epoxy.
  8. Final paint rudder.
  9. Cut rudder key way and test install.
  10. Install console and floor boards.
  11. Build Genoa plinth (forgot about that).
  12. Install forestay plate and keelson links.
  13. Install spinnaker tube (probably on hold till after initial ocean tryout).
  14. Trailer inspections and license.
  15. Install to trailer.
  16. Mast fitting.
  17. Fitout blocks, lines etc.
  18. License and sail.

We have run into a major oops.  The keelson/hog positions the mast step and mast too high.  The No. 4 datum mark is ~10 mm higher than the sheer.  Attempting to move all of the datum markers 1-4 could be done but the max allowable is 15 mm due to existing halyard exit points at marker 3.  Looking like the top of the keelson which is 50mm of deadwood will be partially removed but not until the mast can be stood up to see what the shrouds will allow.

Modified tiller handle to accept the width of the battle stick and installed fore-stay plate.

This feels like progress having the keel hang from the bottom of the boat.  There are just a few steps before this can be trailered and rigging can start.  I need the interior and top paint finished, mast step mounted, ports covered.  The mast step position is determined and aligned for vertical orientation of the mast.

The keel has been mounted to the hull.  Initially the plan was to wrap each bolt with a layer of foil then pot it in place with epoxy from above.  Flexible washers would seal from below.  Opted instead for marine adhesive 3M 5200.  A bit of mess to work with but it wipes up easy enough.  More sealing and paint to follow then mast step installation.

A long time coming...

Mast and sails have arrived from UK!!  via Aukland.  I never thought a mast would come in a box but there it is.  The hardware and rigging is exquisite.  My SAC allowed me to store the boom and sails in the living room :)'

The gap between keel and hull is matched now with epoxy.  Here it is removed and filled to a level uniform surface.  Possibly just a day away from installing keel to hull.

This Valspar LIC40 is very easy to work with.  Adding grit to the paint for some no slip areas fore and aft and along entire side decks.  There remains one more coating across the top and some touch-up in the cockpit.

Finishing up the rudder stock key-way with drills and files.

The keel is aligned in place and the gaps between flange and hull need to be filled.  The blobs will give a profile for further fill after the keel is off.  Some day in the future the keel could be machined to true up the interface but this will have to suffice.

Mast and sails are due at the port tomorrow morning.

First coat complete.  Anti skid layer coming up then a final coat and details.

Trailer licensing went smoothly after running all over town.  First to Motor Vehicle Department and Police station to assign a VIN number, verify trailer weight documentation and provide notary documents on construction and completion dates.  Then to bank for cash and notary of documents.  Next off to a gas station where they perform safety inspections(common in Hawaii).  They gave a temporary approval, checked lights and functionality, insurance, license plate light, weight.  Off to Registration office for a license plate, registration sticker, payment.  They verify weight certificate, safety inspection, notarized VIN documents.  Back to gas station for safety check sticker good for one year.   Once trailer is modified for landing pad blocks and cushions it should be ready to receive boat.

Started in on paint in small batches of 6 oz.  Rudder and aft deck firt coat done.

  1. Sand out deck surfaces and clean.
  2. Test deck paint system with anti skid material.  The roll and tip painting was very successful but the working time was a bit fiddley.

  14. Install to trailer.

The deck is now ready for paint so waiting for weather to warm up.  Rudder will be repainted as well.
Trying to key-way the stock and tiller block.

Monday, June 6, 2016

The boat is back upright and being readied for top paint, anti skid material and detailing.  Still not sure when the mast and sails will arrive.

Need some drier weather now.

Sand deck final.
Keel insertion coming up.  The plan here is to level and align the boat and keel to one another. Place a mold release or tape onto the hull or keel interface then insert epoxy to fill the gap.  The bolts will be wrapped in paper, installed and floated in their respective holes and filled as well with epoxy.  Need to make sure this does not alter keel or hull with respect to rules.  I do not have the heart to gouge out the bottom of the keelson or the time to grind away the keel flange let alone do it right.

Flipping boat back over.
Painting the interior a bit while it is in a convenient position.

Todo:

  1. Sand out deck surfaces and clean.
  2. Test deck paint system with anti skid material.  The roll and tip painting was very successful but the working time was a bit fiddley.
  3. Apply first coat of deck paint system.
  4. Apply second coat.  Mask and paint stripe.
  5. Final paint touch up interior and vacuum throughout.
  6. Mount tank covers, 4x.
  7. Make keel bolt upper plates.  Mount keel, bolts and epoxy.
  8. Final paint rudder.
  9. Cut rudder key way and test install.
  10. Install console.
  11. Install forestay plate and keelson links.
  12. Install spinnaker tube.
  13. Trailer inspections and license.
  14. Install to trailer.
  15. Fitout blocks, lines etc.
